News Jun 1, 2007 Phoenix Mercury’s Diana Taurasi to hold Summer Basketball Camp

Series of three basketball camp sessions to focus on fundamentals and skill development

PHOENIX – WNBA star Diana Taurasi of the Phoenix Mercury has announced that she will hold a three-part basketball camp for girls ages 8-14 throughout the summer. The camp series will be held on June 18 and July 12 at the Arizona Premier Basketball Academy in Gilbert, and a special third session will be held on August 15 on the Phoenix Mercury practice court at US Airways Center. Each session will run from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m., with on-court instruction from Diana and Camp Director Bridget Pettis, who is also an Assistant Coach for the Mercury. All campers will receive free ticket vouchers for two different Mercury games.

The camp is open to girls ages 8-14 and will cost $225.00 per camper, which includes all three sessions and two (2) free ticket vouchers each to attend the Mercury vs. Los Angeles Sparks on July 20 and the Mercury vs. Sacramento Monarchs on August 19 (four total free ticket vouchers). All campers will also receive a camp t-shirt and an autograph from Taurasi.

Taurasi is one of the most highly decorated collegiate players of all-time. Upon graduation she was selected with the No. 1 overall selection in the 2004 WNBA draft by the Phoenix Mercury. She averaged 17.0 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game as a rookie as she was named to the Western Conference All-Star team and the WNBA Rookie of the Year. In 2005 the Mercury just missed the playoffs as Taurasi put up identical numbers. In 2006, she led the league in scoring at 25.3 points per game. In another First Team All-WNBA and All Star year, she broke the WNBA single season scoring mark as well as the single game high with 47. This summer following the World Championships, Taurasi was named USA Basketball’s Female Athlete of the Year.

Winners of a franchise-best seven straight to finish 2006, the Phoenix Mercury look to pick up where they left off led by All-Stars Diana Taurasi, Cappie Pondexter and Tangela Smith in the record-shattering offense of head coach Paul Westhead. Under the direction of new general manager Ann Meyers Drysdale, Phoenix will be showcased on ABC this Saturday, June 2 as it takes on the Connecticut Sun. At halftime of the game, the broadcast will feature a behind-the-scenes look at the Mercury’s preparation for the 2007 season.
