It’s been almost a year since John Cena could use his signature catch phrase. The 10-time WWE Champion has been embroiled in several feuds since he last held the belt, including one with the “big red monster” Kane, who left lying on the mat during a live episode of Monday Night RAW at US Airways Center this past January.
When Cena returns to Phoenix on July 15, he will be fighting for a chance to earn his next title match, as he hopes to climb back up the WWE ladder, literally. The polarizing superstar announced during last night’s episode of RAW that he would be entering the “Money in the Bank” ladder match for the first time in his career. The winner of the main event at the annual MITB pay-per-view will be the first one to grab a steal suitcase hanging high above the ring and containing an open contract for a title match, which can be redeemed at any time.
“Everyone who holds the suitcase has cashed it in to be the champion,” Cena explained. “I know that better than anyone. I've had that suitcase cashed in on me more than once. I just figured it's about time I'm on the other side of the fence.”
Shortly after his “historic announcement,” which Cena had teased on Twitter earlier in the afternoon, interim general manager Vickie Guerrero made some news of her own, telling the nationally televised audience that the WWE’s board of governors had decided that ALL of the competitors in the MITB match in Phoenix would be former champions, as well.
Cena’s competition includes Kane, a previous MITB winner, the Big Show and Chris Jericho, the original inventor of the unique stipulation match.
Tickets for the event, which will also feature a title match between current champion C.M. Punk and challenger Daniel Bryan, are on sale now!
